Towns
- Thames and Whitianga will have most new housing, commerce and industry, with retail centres and hotels.
- Growth in other centres will be minimal and in character.
- Apartment-style housing in main centres could make housing more affordable.
Economy
- Thames and Whitianga airfields could be developed and could even cater
for national domestic services.
- Aquaculture will stay within existing areas, but the species base will grow. Improved Thames wharf facilities will cater for the industry.
Landscape
- Protecting special landscapes, plants and animals outside Thames and Whitianga will be a priority in all planning decisions.
- Development strictly controlled in open space.
- Undeveloped coastal areas largely protected for recreational use.
- Most Maori land is rural or coastal so gaining consent for papakainga
housing would be difficult and/or expensive.
Community Facilities
- Future investment in public sport, health and cultural facilities, transport, schools and reserves focused on Thames and Whitianga.

Imagine. Our future if development is focused in Thames and Whitianga, creating two very different environments in the peninsula: concentrated development and protected open space.
