Keeping our youngsters involved

Our Blueprint technical team members Mike Baker (Hauraki Whaanui) and Erin (Environment Waikato) did a really good job of hosting a very interactive blueprint display at the Hauraki Cultural Festival in Manaia recently. Children were asked to match up shells to win a small prize or read out the Blueprint’s te reo posters in the form of a rap or well known tune. It was great fun for everyone and is one of the initiatives we’ve used to keep our youngsters involved in this process.

Blueprint Youth Competition winners!

Congratulations to everyone for taking part. In our eyes, everyone who took the time to enter our competition or give us their feedback is a winner because their views will help shape the future of the Coromandel.

What did you tell us? There were common themes from young people. Whether you live in Colville, Te Puru, Whangamata, Whitianga, Tairua or by the Kauaeranga River, many of you said you love the pohutukawa trees, the native bush, the song of birds, the beach, the sound of waves crashing on the shore, and the way that our towns ‘feel’, that is, they feel safe, and you can walk down the street and lots of people wave and say hi because we know each other and care.

The ultimate aim of the Blueprint is to protect and enhance all these things that we love and although this will take some time to achieve, we’re stoked you’ve joined the journey and hope you’ll continue to help us along the way.

The Blueprint is all about making decisions today that will shape the kind of place the Coromandel will be in the future. Young people are the future of the Coromandel and it’s so important to us that you get your say about what that future will be like!

A lot has changed on the Coromandel over the last 50 years, how will it change over the next 50? By getting involved in the Blueprint, you can all help shape what changes occur over the next 50 years to help make the Coromandel an even better place to live and visit.
